UPDATE SUMMER 2017 – the first part of this post about the coffee – is no longer happening. Also the greeting cards has some major news too which you can read here…So feel free to skip on down to the Younique news, why don’t you?
We’re getting close lovelies…Cards, Cosmetics, Coffee are all coming together soon.
Over the last few years I’ve launched small businesses. First it was a direct sales business – Younique.
A year later I added another MLM to my bow, Phoenix Trading greeting cards.
Then a year later it was, coffee but this time my own brand of coffee – Neart.
Neart is the first ever Scottish Coffee aimed at mindfulness.
Slowly, over the past six or eight months, I’ve been putting together a sort of idea for a hamper with Cards, Cosmetics, Coffee and maybe chocolate in it too. Maybe candles? Caramel? Some people have even suggested Champaign. 🙂
Anything starting with a letter C it would seem…
Seriously though, I’ve not had as much time to focus on the makeup or greeting cards but will continue to work those two businesses as and when I can. For now it’s about getting a coffee off the ground. See what I did there? Coffee. Ground. Ha!
The 4 Coffees Are:
Neart Power – twice the caffeine for times when you need that boost!
Neart Energy – a medium blend from the Americas
Neart Force – a Blue Mountain, Kenya, single origin coffee
Neart Flow – a Swiss Water Decaf
There is one size, 250g bags, and four options: Whole Bean, Filter, Cafetière and Espresso grind too. Once we get up and running there will be lovely small gift sampler versions of all of four coffees in one type.
New Younique Products & Team Talk
I’ll be honest, Younique has been quiet the past few months for myself and my team. March broke all kinds of company records, but since then, it’s been crickets for the A-team.
I still love being a Younique Presenter and Sponsor, but life does seem to be getting in the way. My focus is drawn toward the new coffee project Neart Coffee so that has left little time to market any new makeup and skin care products from Younique. Quite excited to check out some of the new products – such as the Touch Loose Powder Foundation. If there is one thing Younique is awesome at, in my humble opinion it’s clearly Foundation.
NEW Phoenix Cards
Slowly I’ve started to sell some more cards for 2017. Valentine’s, birthday and general cards are going at last. There is a lot of stock here at the homestead, but where it really needs to be is out and about. So I’ve taken it into the office and it’s the “Honour System” whereby if anyone needs a card, they can grab one and just put the money in the envelope or PayPal Me their card money.
UPDATED 2020: Am currently still a presenter but not marketing the products or actively sponsoring any longer. If you need a hands-off sponsor then I’m your gal.
My Youniqueiversary – 2 Years On
So pleased to report that today is my two-year anniversary as a Younique presenter and sponsor. My Youniqueiversary, if you will. This post will pick up from last year’s My Year In Younique post. Over the last year, I have continued to detail the highs and lows of being a Younique Presenter*. It’s not easy to be Younique, but overall I still love presenting, as much as the day I joined, two years ago. And:
I’ve continued to recruit presenters – nearly 35 to date – which isn’t too bad (without trying).
I’ve reached another level.
The new products, ranges, kits, kudos, catalogues and so forth – help to keep things fresh and interesting for me.
Low Point of the Year
Arguably, the lowest point of my year, was having someone nark on me for my unsanctioned “dedicated Younique blog”. Whoops! My bad.
I was essentially busted for not having sought approval of the blog. Hands up, that was my own fault but I’d run it for a year and a half before ever being nailed, so I can only assume that someone complained.
Being shut down killed my Younique mojo for quite some time. Months, if I am being honest. Not only mine, but it also killed the morale of some of my team mates. It really wasn’t good. I believe that I lost presenters as a result.
So please make sure if you have a dedicated Younique blog that you seek approved by compliance. Read the Presenter guide carefully and do learn from my mistake! Please.
So after some soul searching, I took some time out, regrouped and set up the more general blog that you see here today. Now, instead of only dealing with makeup company, it features my greeting cards business and any anything noteworthy that I come across. Gifts, businesses or even people who deserve some coverage! Recently I featured the lovely Anna from My Cupcake Toppers.
High Point of the Year
At the end of November 2015, I finally climbed up another rung on the ladder to reach Blue status with Younique. To reach blue you need to sell $4000 with your team. That was one of the best moments of my entire business life. Seriously, it felt amazing to receive that order that pushed me to the next level – halfway up the ladder, or so.
When I joined Younique, I thought I’d be black status in a matter of months. That was my goal. Green by March and Black later in the year. To be honest, that was rather naive.
Sure, some Younique presenters have achieved the top ranks fast, but honestly, the vast majority haven’t and probably won’t. We currently have over half a million Younique presenters and just over 200 have reached Black Status levels 1, 2 ,3. Do the math.
The hardest part about sponsorship is seeing people join, often do excellent work for a while, and then they give up for whatever reason. Life gets in the way. They buckle to negative family and friend’s comments. They get frustrated that they’re not making any money it. I’ve always taken the “in it for the long haul” approach to Younique. Slow and steady. Some months I do really well and others not good at all. Generally I am pleased if it pays a bill or two. Plus I love getting discounted makeup.
Should You Join Younique?
Well you might be wondering “Should I join Younique?” and the answer is that it depends. It’s not for everyone. I love it still. I love the products. If you’re solely looking for a way to earn quick cash then it may not be for you…It could be, but probably not. I’d rather have you join with realistic expectations.
If you like the idea of something you can run alongside something else, enjoy discounted makeup, have a bit of fun, and want to make some new friends along the way – then it probably will suit you quite well.
In the worse case scenario – you get all the makeup in the picture above for an amazing rate. The Younique Presenters Kit changes regularly. It’s always a great mix of products, regardless. So even if you join for the kit (become a “kit snatcher”) it’s probably worth it just for that.
I’m also a Phoenix Trader in my first year of running my own greeting cards business. Unlike Younique though, I don’t actively promote the Phoenix business. I joined because I enjoy sending cards to clients/customers, family and friends and wanted to buy them at cost.
A keen networker, I do end up selling UK greeting cards to people I know – family, friends, colleagues.
On this blog, I can spend a little time talking a bit more about that too.
Finally, in the line of the work that I’m in, I meet wonderfully-talented business owners who are selling amazing products here in Scotland. This blog it’s a chance to talk a bit about the things I come across here too.
Direct Sales Businesses
Not all direct sales businesses are the same. The thing about running them is that you can feel pressured to buy/sell products or recruit people. I’ve chosen two that I am happy to be involved with – because I don’t actually have to sell or recruit in either. I chose to work Younique, but I haven’t been with Phoenix. The option to work more or less is down to me.
So if you’d be interested in finding out more about being Younique or joining Phoenix then please get in touch here.
Younique Hits 500,000
It’s exciting to be Younique. We’ve now reached the half a million mark. What I don’t know though is if that’s active presenters or ones who have simply joined. I suspect it’s the latter. I personally have recruited thirty four Younique presenters but half of them or so are no longer active. So I’d be curious to know the actual active presenter numbers, personally. Regardless it’s awesome to have hit 500,000 and before predicted I believe.
Welcome back to another instalment of My Week in Younique where this week I talk about my team’s achievements, how to get the 3D Fiber Lashes+ just in time for the holidays, the December Kudos (which is awesome by the way!) and my biggest news of all is that Black Friday made me BLUE status (Finally)!!!
Big High Five to Helen
Once again, my sole Aussie recruit, Helen, has kicked-ass. I’ve just noticed that two presenters signed up on my mother’s birthday and Helen was one. That has to be a great omen! Helen (pictured here with wee Amy) smashed sales in November, hitting Yellow status and outselling more than the next top selling presenter by more than double.
For that reason I’d really like to help her build her team up and reach the Fast Start promotion.
So for the next few inquiries I get here, I’ll have them sign up under her. They’ll still be a part of my team (entitled to any FREE Blogging or Social Media coaching) but they’ll signed up under Helen as their sponsor! Win/win as this gal’s going places!!
The trick I’m learning with Younique is to help your recruits build their teams. We are nothing without our teams. So it’s not just about having Younique recruits, it’s about formulating a team.
Personally speaking I’ve had lots of recruits in the first year, over 20, but 50% of whom haven’t done a thing…
Also worth mentioning is our next team presenter to promote up to Yellow since Helen was Louise. Well done girl!!
Also a big shout out to my fellow Cali Gals – Tina and Teri who are inching their way toward the Yellow promotion too! They may even make it this month collecting their pay-bump, up to 25%, just in time for Christmas.
More New Younique Product News: Buy the December Kudos!
So one of the most exciting things to happen this week is the announcement of the new December Kudos. Not only is it my fave product the Splurge Cream Eye Shadows but if you buy a set of three (and as luck would have it there are three new colours this month) – you get a FREE, brand new product – the Moodstruck Precision Liquid Eye Liner…How amazing is that? Of course I had to buy mine last night as I always aspire to have every Younique product in stock. (Any excuse right?)
3D Fiber Lashes+: One Set Left!
I currently am down to my last set of 3D Fiber Lashes in stock. Sold one this afternoon to a woman in Glasgow who phoned up last night needing a set for a present for her sister-in-law. We met, she paid me her £23 and received her 3D lashes and a FREE greeting card too.
Though I say I am down to my last set, there are five more sets (plus one from the Black Friday deal) that have been dispatched so do hope they arrive tomorrow or Saturday.
If you’re anywhere in the UK, for the next week, I can save you some money on shipping and you’ll receive them quicker but after next weekend I’ll be off for the holidays so act fast! To be fair if you needed some 3D lashes plus over the festive period I’m sure I’ll still sort you out. So yes, the choice is up to you whether you wish to buy direct from me (to save time and money) or order them online 24/7.
Younique Black Friday Made Me Blue
Finally, as many will know, I have been a Younique presenter since the company launched in the UK on November 1, 2014. I had not tried the products, just took a chance on the £69 kit start up cost and hoped for the best.
Well, as a social media trainer, Younique was a good fit for me. I already was on every channel there is (just about) and I know the basics of SEO as well.
So off I went and quickly qualified as White status, then Yellow, hit the “Fast Start” bonus and Pink…where I stalled for a year.
Younique is a fun of course, but often a very frustrating business. It’s definitely not for anyone who is just hoping to make a fast buck (or pound or euro). If I was only in it for the money I’d have quit nine months ago. It’s also not for anyone who is easily put off by other people’s negativity (family, friends, Younique haters etc). If you’re someone who isn’t of strong mind you’ll probably give up.
But thankfully this week – thirteen months of tenacity paid off and I finally reached Blue Status with Younique! I’ve had a lot of people asking me what that actually means. Well for one it means I’m halfway up the Younique ladder (or so). Four more levels to go – Green, Orange, Purple and Black.
It also means I’ll make 4% on my company sales (the downline below me). Looking forward to that first Blue payment soon!
I will be honest with you – I was delighted to reach blue at 11:57pm Sunday night. It happened as I was on my weekly training call with my team – e.g. Kelly. She got to witness first hand as I almost started to cry with excitement, relief and a few other emotions. Though I have to be honest you, I’m proud of hitting Blue with its 4000 sales but right around now Green is looking impossible. Do hope it doesn’t take another thirteen months, like it did to reach blue status, to promote to the next level – GREEN!!
Only time will tell…
Younique by Thea – Gift Vouchers!
Don’t forget I’m now selling Younique by Thea Gift Vouchers in the UK. You buy them – and the recipient shops through me directly and I send them to the desired address! Easy peasy! Perfect for anyone who needs a last minute gift idea for the makeup lover in their life!
Want some 3D Fiber Lashes? How about some other fabulous makeup too? And a cute black bag? We’re just hours away from Younique’s Black Friday Bundle being available to buy! It’s another Limited Edition cracker this year. (I personally want it for the bag…)
So what’s in the Younique Back Friday deal this year?
Well, let me tell you:
Moodstruck 3D Fiber Lashes+
Uplift Eye Serum
a Moodstruck Precision Brow Gel in the color of your choice
an Opulence Lipstick in the color of your choice

You get all of that for just $89 USD ($43 savings), $106 CDN ($53 savings), $116 AUD ($57 savings), $123 NZD ($59 savings), £69 GBP (£34 savings), €96 EUR (€45.50 savings), $1,545 MXN ($745 savings).
These are strictly limited edition deals so you will want to act fast to get yours. The Younique by Thea “Black Friday bundle” will be for sale for three days. They’ll go on sale at 12:01 a.m. PT on Friday (that’s 8:01am UK time) on November 27, 2015, until 11:59 p.m. PT Sunday November 29, 2015 (so that’s 7:59 Monday AM UK).
As it’s the middle of the night when I am writing this, it’s less than eight hours to go! Thanks for stopping by! Now please go shop and help me to hit Blue…or even Green 🙂 (Chance would be a fine thing).
If you’re interested in joining “TheA Team” then please reach out to me here – via one of the ways in the heading of this site (email and phone numbers are listed).
UPDATED 2020: Am currently still a presenter but not marketing the products or actively sponsoring any longer. If you need a hands-off sponsor then I’m your gal.
Thinking about Joining Younique?
Considering starting your own Younique business? Googling to learn more about whether “it’s a scam”, a “pyramid scheme”, too good to be true OR if it’s just right for you?
Read on to hear about my journey to the one-year mark. It’s my hope that this anniversary update will shed some light on what it’s been like for me to be a Younique presenter and sponsor for my first year. That said, everyone’s experience will be different, and as I often say: “Younique is not for everyone…”
My Year in Younique
One year ago, on October 26, 2014, I made the somewhat unusual decision to join Younique. I say “unusual” for a couple of reasons.
1) Right up until the week before I joined, I’d never even heard of the products (not even the flagship 3D Fiber Lashes mascara!)
2) Another reason that it was sort of “unusual”, was because I was never someone that anyone would consider a glamorous, makeup sort of girl.
Though I’ve always worn makeup, I wasn’t ever particularly excited by it. So it was a bit of a blind and bold decision to join Younique like I did (and more than a few friends were a little shocked).
I figured, in the worse case scenario, I was out £79, but at least I’d have some makeup to show for it.
You know what? I am now more excited by makeup than I ever thought possible!
So people can change!
Charting My Younique Path
Research. Research. Research. Right after I joined, for the weeks that followed while I waited for my kit to arrive, I could barely sleep due to my excitement!
I would stay up late watching tutorials and webinars, or surfing around for information about the company and its products.
When I found any harsh criticism about the company or any products, I had to take it with a pinch of salt, and not let it put me off the company entirely (a few times it nearly did but I’m glad I didn’t listen!)
Younique is not for everyone, and there is no company in the world with 100% satisfaction. Not one.
There will always be haters. The internet is filled with them. There will always be people that have issues with their orders, or who don’t like a product, or are allergic to a product. Again no company in the world will have 100% approval ratings across the board. It’s impossible.
Anyway it was all about the research those early weeks. I took the time to look at different presenters’ social media profiles, Youtube channels (etc) – and noticed ones that really “worked” and the ones that, well, didn’t (e.g. those who were just spamming their shop links left, right and center, in other words – they just tried to sell, sell, sell). Those sorts of marketing tactics have given Younique a bit of a bad rep. (Many people have commented on how “spammy” some of their presenter friends or followers are – which makes it challenging for those of us who don’t want to be seen that way!)
My “day job” is as a Social Media Trainer, traveling across Scotland, so I do have a very good working knowledge with all the major platforms and many of the non-majors (‘ello, Tsu, Blab…)
Younique is all about Facebook – they’re linked. I, however, am not. So I decided, from day one, not to bother with Facebook pages or even Facebook parties (they’re a pain to make successful). It appeared to me that most presenters were focusing their efforts on FB – so it felt over-saturated there, so I decided to leave them all to it.
What’s so great about Younique is you can choose how you want to market your own business. You need FB to join up, but no one says that’s how you have to spend all your marketing efforts…
So, as ever, I chose a different path. I’m a blogger. I’ve blogged for many, many years now. I also teach SEO (search engine optimization). I love Twitter and I am a huge fan of Google+.
When I joined Younique, very few people were focusing on G+, which has always been a fave platform of mine, so that’s where I spend most of my energy. That was where I could be a bigger fish in a smaller pond.
To this day, there are only a dozen or so (if that) Younique Presenters on Google+ that I feel are even doing it right. By “right” I mean posting content, telling stories, engaging with others – which is what the platform is all about.
The rest are just spamming their profiles with their own party links saying “shop my party” – (essentially treating it like it’s Facebook). It’s not like Facebook at all, so it’s not going to work if you do that.
Well, I can’t give all my strategies away here…but if you #jointheAteam, I will share them. I offer an open Sunday night coaching call with my team each week to talk about their social media strategies.
It should be noted that a few of my team mates are doing great work on Facebook and more power to them! It’s a personal choice! You can do what’s right for you!
Younique Recruiting, aka Sponsoring
Boy, I have learned a lot about myself, and managing a team in this first year. To be fair, I’ve also learned that there’s still much room for improvement…
It took 18 days to get my first recruit (a straight man, rather ironically) and a day later my second joined my team.
About a week later four more! I was flying! But alas, most of my first few recruits never lasted beyond the first 90 days – much to my dismay.
Thankfully two have – Marie and Karen (pictured with me on the right). Those two were friends before Younique, and I am pleased to say remain dear friends and active presenters!
By the end of first month, on November 30, 2014, I managed to reach Yellow status (the first level up the ladder after the starting point, white).
A week later “Fast Start”* (In the first 90 days having 1. $2000 in Personal Retail Sales (PRS) and 2. Sponsor at least 3 new Presenters).
I was over the moon about that and the cute two charms that followed.
Headed home to California for the holidays with high hopes of recruiting two friends in particular out there. I felt certain both gals would be amazing at Younique. We often do that – think that of our friends, but for whatever reason, though they both loved the products, neither seemed too interested in joining my team.
It’s hard not to get disappointed when your family or friends don’t really seem to take an interest or support you.
In a strange twist of fate, two other long-standing friends did join my team! One in particular had done direct sales (a few times) so I was certain she’d rock this business! No doubt whatsoever!!
Well, she didn’t, and by the end of her 90 days, she was gone too! Dang!
The other teamie remains, but only buys the products for herself and no other orders. Still I’m glad she’s kept it up this year! It all helps!
By the end of December, month two, myself and my company did nearly 2700 PRS (personal retail sales), so I managed to hit Pink status for the very first time! It seemed almost impossible to hit that 2000 PRS, but I did and I was gonna keep going all the way to the top (Black status)!!
I’d high hopes of reaching Blue in January or February then Green by March (in time for St Patrick’s Day or something), but I guess I wasn’t specific enough, because it didn’t happen last March but maybe next?
You see, I’d reached Pink so fast that I was lulled into thinking that was easy enough, but then it didn’t happen again for another NINE months! D’oh. Talk about frustrating! So it feels like I’ve been stalled at Pink forever – and I am really hoping these holidays will help me, and my team, to promote up the ladder.
Watch this space….
What I Spent on Younique: Year 1
There are certain things we can and can’t say regarding income made with Younique. We’re not allowed to promise anything with regards to income, and, frankly, I’d be amazed if you made a profit in Younique in the first year…Yes, am sure some Youniques do/have, (some even in their first month) but I personally suspect most will not…
I have spent a few thousand pounds on Younique products this year.
Don’t worry though – in reality, you don’t have to buy anything after your startup presenter kit.
You get the makeup in that kit, and the FREE website, and that’s you.
That’s all you ever have to spend…
But I have always strived to have every product that we sell, so that I can use it myself, and also to show people who are interested in seeing them in person…
Also it should be noted, that some of those orders were for other people who gave me money to buy their products (saving them the £6.95 UK shipping fees).
Have I earned enough to break even? No, probably not. I suspect I’m running at a slight loss, BUT I have had great makeup that I’ve used all year. So not really a “loss”.
I’d have bought makeup anyway and this way all the makeup I buy I receive 25% back on. Not only that I’m paid three hours after ever sale! Plus when I shop through my own party links, I get to earn 1/2 price credit, and even free makeup in the form of y-cash to spend.
So in my mind it’s not been a financial loss at all…if that makes sense?
“Are you Making Money with Younique?”
If anyone is expecting to join Younique and for it to be “easy money”- then they’ve got another thing coming. It’s not easy. As I say all the time “it’s not for everyone”.
In fact, the Younique presenter agreement sums it up pretty well: “financial success with Younique requires commitment, effort, and sales skill.”
I second that emotion, and I am learning more each day, which is a good thing, I think.
The thing is I get people saying “yeah but” to me a lot. “Yeah but are you making any money at Younique yet?”
How many businesses do you know make money in the first year?
Or even the second or third? Why should a direct sales business be any different? It takes time. Lots of it. It’s not throw a few links up and rack in the dough. Those efforts will show no return whatsoever.
For me though, I’m prepared to give it time. I am putting in a lot of hard work now – so that in a few years, it IS making me money. It’s starting to now…
Most of my sales (and my recruits) now come from strangers – via this very blog. Thank you for that.
The challenge with tallying what I’ve earned with Younique is that I’ve given some makeup away as gifts, I have been paid cash in US dollars and UK pounds, I get paid by PayPal (in both currencies) and BACS bank transfers too. I also sell through my youniqueproducts/thea site – so I’ve lot of monetary places to be keeping track of…I’m still going through it all, and I do look forward to seeing the overall total (and so does my accountant Erik!)
You’re Nothing Without a Team
To make any money and promote within the company, you’re going to need to be prepared to build a team of people who are prepared to do the same. When I joined I heard “recruit 5 and train them to recruit 5, who recruit 5” – often. Sounds easy enough, doesn’t it?
Pah, it’s not.
Or at least it hasn’t been for me!
I mentioned a few of my own recruits, of which there have been 21 to date (I was hoping for 3 more by today so it will have been an average of two per month, but 21 it is…)
Some people have joined my team and never even spoken to me, and then dropped off. (Presumably just “kit snatchers”).
Some have joined my team, spoken to me and said they wanted to build a successful business, and then did nothing at all, then dropped off.
Some have dropped off due to life getting the way, and then reactivated and kept going! Hooray!
Some are actually working their business and recruiting team mates of their own. Double hooray!
To me, the hardest part of the business – not the selling of the makeup (it sells itself), but the recruiting like minded (ambitious) teamies or as I call them “rock stars”.
It’s been particularly hard to watch people join only to do nothing (or very little) then quit. It’s really hard to not take that personally – even though it has little or nothing to do with me.
No one’s direct sales success or failure can be solely down to their upline or sponsor. My own sponsor ended up quitting halfway through the year.
There is no excuse to not be a success in your own right – given the amount of support there is for Younique. There are webinars, Facebook groups/pages, YouTube channels, blogs, etc.
After the first week, I seldom went to my upline for anything, as a quick search of Google usually revealed the solution, or sometimes a chat with Younique support. It was great I could lean on her but I tried hard to not have to!
Back to my recruits, though…Yes, many of them have quit, but many have remained and started to build a team of their own, as I said. To date, there has been a company high of 34 people. How cool is that? Active at this moment? 20. Three of those are marked for deletion again. D’oh!
Younique is not for everyone.
Another challenge with a team is not taking things personally when some people don’t really respond to, or resonate with, you, so they find other presenters who resonate with them more.
But if I look at my own style of learning I did the same thing. There are some Younique Black Status presenters I think are amazing (like the ones pictured here) and then there are others who aren’t my cup of tea.
Rapport is a strange beast and not everyone gels.
Not everyone relates to my style of Younique coaching, so I’m having to learn to not take that sort of thing personally! I try to continually remind them I am there if they need me to lean on but many have found other presenters to go to and that’s good! Whatever works!
One thing I have loved about Younique are the incentives. Getting different charms for each level, and for fast start and the recent +YOU movement. It gives you something to work toward. I’m a sucker for those charms. I want them all and I’ll get there eventually. This email came in mid-week and it made my day. It was fabulous to recruit three presenters in one week! That was three weeks ago…
NOTE: The day after posting this I finally got another recruit Emma! Meanwhile I anxiously await for my new +YOU charm to add to my collection!
My Younique Wrap
So that’s My Year in Younique summary for this first, rather challenging year. My goal, if you’re interested, is still to promote up to Blue or Green (if not higher) for next year’s update.
It’s taken quite a while to get here, but I truly feel that I have the start a totally awesome team now! We just all need to synchronise our awesomeness. It’s often been the case that I had a great month in personal sales and my team didn’t. Or they did great and my sales were patchy.
To be successful in this business (or any business really), I believe it takes a positive attitude, tons of tenacity and self-belief. It’s also about hard work and dedication, not just on your business but on yourself. Perseverance is paramount.
There will be days when you want to pack it in, but if you can step away for a day or two, you’ll often come back feeling renewed. Set goals, and make step towards them daily in some way. It’s about riding out the highs and lows. You get a cluster of sales, you’re on a high, then you have nothing for two weeks, you’re on a low…repeat, lather, rinse.
Well that’s been my experience and it should be noted that we’re all different so Younique experience may vary! I’ve met a lot of people that have loved the company and the products and many who haven’t. As I keep saying, “Younique is not for everyone” – but it is for me!
This year, I think I’ve learned that a successful year is not solely based on monetary terms, because every single day I’m learning more about selling, people, communication, mentoring and business management. And you know what? Some of those aforementioned strangers have now now become truly amazing and inspiring friends!

Becoming a Younique presenter and sponsor has been one of the best, but also most challenging, decisions I’ve ever made…
If you’re considering joining Younique, then let me tell you some of my own truths. These may not be everyone’s truths, but I suspect some of these are fairly universal, and not only for Youniques, but other direct sales companies.
Before you join any MLM, Younique or otherwise, you should ask yourself what your “why?” is? If it’s just about making money fast, then you’ll likely simply end up quitting.
For me personally, I had been searching (for years), for something I could do from home (or anywhere in fact as I write these words, I’m on a flight between the US and the UK). I was specifically trying to find something I could promote through my long-running website, soyouvebeendumped.com (SYBD) and my various social media channels.
I had been looking for just the right product or service that would be relevant to a large portion of my SYBD community.
I had friends and associates who sold Aloe products through Forever Living, and others who did Herbal Life, but though they were “close”, they didn’t feel quite right…so I kept searching.
Last Autumn, before it launched in the UK, I heard about Younique and that was it. I was sold! Breakups and makeup, to me, seemed to go well together. It was my thinking that women who go through a breakup may want to treat themselves to some products to make themselves feel beautiful, and some of them may even want to start their business running their own company (to take their mind off their breakup). Win/win.
So MY WHY was to find something that would be useful and relevant to women and that would utilise my Social Media skills. It wasn’t just about making a fast buck (or pound or whatever).
Looking for a quick and totally easy way to make some money? Post a few links on your social media channels and sit back and watch the commissions flow in? Then Younique’s not for you. Younique is a real challenge, well for most of us, I believe.
It’s what my dad would call “character building”.
It’s a constant challenge, but it’s the good kind of challenge. It’s one that will test and teach you every day in every way.
You will likely find that people around you won’t get your reasons for joining an MLM. Some may avoid you, some may even unfriend you (a few have me!), you may hear derogatory remarks too. But if you can continue on, regardless of the negativity, you will be stronger for it.
Personal development is a large aspect to any MLM, and Younique is no different. So use it to learn as much about yourself, your motivation and your determination, as possible. Work out early on what your “why” is, as mentioned above, because if you don’t really know it, you probably will just give up.
Some people will find the elite status presenters’ stories inspiring. Others will be put off (when not as successful as them) and simply give up.
Personally I challenge myself each month, and try to push myself to do better all the time. I also get motivated by my team. If they start doing better than me, (and they are this week!!), then it forces me to up the ante and do better.
Very rarely does my team beat me in sales (though it has happened) so it forces me to work smart and lead by example. This sisterhood motivates me!
Younique is FUN…this company keeps it FUN – it has to be said. Each month, it would seem there is something new, whether it’s a new product (or sometimes six), kudos, a new territory (Germany goes live this week and Mexico in October) or perhaps some other incentive to grow our business further.
Younique keeps keeps the business fresh, interesting and motivating. If you’re looking for a bit of fun in your life, then this could very well be it!
Looking for an opportunity to run your own business, set your own hours and days, working any place you like?
Fancy learning new skills like marketing, promotion, sales, networking, customer service, persistence and all kinds of personal development skills? If you wanted to but always thought you couldn’t do it, then this may be the business that will prove you wrong – but if you fully commit.
If you apply yourself, you’ll learn what hard work, creativity and determination can do for you.
Or you can be like a lot of other people and give up after three or six months stating “it’s too hard” or “there’s no money in it” or “my upline din’t help me” – or any other excuses you can come up with.
We all have the same products, the same sources for information (e.g. Younique itself, Youtube, the Facebook Presenters Only group, and various upline training teams) so it’s no ones fault if you don’t succeed.
A lot gets said about Younique’s mission which you probably know is to “Uplift, Empower and Validate” – but it goes beyond that to the ingredients being used in the products, the eco-friendlieness of the packaging and the fact that a portion of each sale goes to its foundation which was set up to help abused women.
The Younique Foundation inspires hope in women who were sexually abused as children or adolescents by hosting them at a retreat, where they are uplifted by each other and learn skills that can help them find individual healing. We educate parents and empower them to protect their children from sexual abuse while leading a public dialogue to bring the epidemic of abuse to light.
It’s very fun but it’s also bloody hard work to make it a success. It takes tenacity, consistency and positive attitude to do anything with it. If you want to find out more – read through my blogs, phone me or email me. If you’re ready to join Younique by Thea, you can also do that here.

Younique Products: “Made in the USA”? (Well, Mostly) part 1
Are you wondering: “Where is Younique makeup manufactured?” The answer is, “pretty much all over”. Many of the Younique products are “Made in the USA” – but some of our biggest sellers are not.
Read on – as I take you on a Younique trip around the world to see where six of our most popular products are from! (NOTE: Will do a follow up as soon as I can for more Younique products)…
3D Fiber Lash Mascara
I’ve seen other Younique presenters stating that Younique makeup is “Made in USA” – but the truth is our biggest seller is (was*) not. The 3D Fiber Lashes are actually made in China. I know that will disappoint some of you out there, more than others…
PLEASE NOTE*: Good news the new 3D Fiber Lashes+ are now made in the USA. Only the original formula was were made in China.
While on the subject of the 3D mascara, please only buy your fiber mascaras from a REAL, active Younique presenter (direct through them – or their website). If not mine, than someone else’s. Far too many bargain-hunters are caught out buying Fake 3D Mascaras from Ebay and Amazon – it’s worth paying the full price on something that goes near your eyes, ok? Shop for REAL 3D Fiber Lash mascara on my Younique site – or UK people may want to save themselves a little money by ordering directly through me. You’ll receive them for a little cheaper and a lot faster if you do! (Ring 0141 416 1492 – always in stock)
Moodstruck Mineral Pigment Powders
Good news for the purists who want American-made makeup products – our Moodstruck Mineral Pigment Powders are made in America. If you would like to see the full ingredients of our Moodstruck Mineral Pigment Powders – in both Matte and Shimmer versions, then visit my site.
UPDATE: The Mineral Pigments are now different and called Moodstruck Pressed Shadows. There are 32 different pigment colours to choose from. Interested? Buy your Moodstruck Mineral Pigments now! PS: They’re not just for the eyes, look at all the things you can do with them! So lovely, so versatile!
Splurge Cream Eye Shadow
As followers of my blog probably know, the Splurge Cream Eye Shadow is my fave product, I think…I was surprised to learn that these gorgeous silky shadows are made in Italy! I like them all but Elegant is probably the best.
More Splurge ingredience details from the Youniqe site:

UPDATE FEB 2016: We have a new range of Beachfront Products for lotions and sprays for body tanning – March 2016.
Divine Daily Moisturizer
I sure do love this Divine Daily Moisturizer and I really do wear it every day. This is another of the Younique Products that is “Made in the USA”.
From the Younique Website:
“Divine Moisturizer (https://www.youniqueproducts.com/Thea/newproducts/divine) “Divine is an all new, superior, daily moisturizer featuring honeysuckle, beta fructan, and highly refined triglyceride oil. Honeysuckle has long been sought after for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties…Made in the USA, and manufactured using a “clean formulation” process.”
Refreshed Rose Water
Refreshed Rose Water was initially one of the products I was, I’ll admit to you, a little ambivalent about. Over time though, I gradually started to see how versatile it…Cooling you down on a hot summer’s day. Mixer for my pigments to apply them as eye liners or into my hair. It also can clean makeup brushes. That’s just a few ways the Refreshed Rose water can be used. It is another of Younique’s “Made in the USA” products!
There is a ridiculous amount of ingredients in the Rose Water – too many to list here – but if you want to see the full list then visit theRefreshed Rose Water page on my Youniquesite and click on “ingredients” below the “Add to Cart” button.
No matter where it comes from, Younique’s makeup is always naturally-based*, not tested on animals, and are generally free from parabens, and other nasty chemicals that will harm your body or you skin.
*Some products do have talc for example, the beachfront bronzer.
Well, I could have sworn I’d already written this blog, or at least some notes onto my phone or iPod when traveling, but I can’t seem to find it anywhere.
It will be a fairly quick “bumper edition” as I’ve not done “My Week in Younique” for two weeks now. Sometimes life gets in the way…My apologies.
New Team Mates to Welcome
In the last My Week in Younique update I welcomed Jo to the team. She immediately had gone on to qualify as an official White Status presenter within 48 hours.
That’s mighty impressive (considering some of my team mates have yet to get a single sale on the board!)
Now I need to welcome Jill. She joined through this very blog (I think) late in the evening – much to my joy. I am rather hoping she will take after Jo in terms of sales.
No pressure though, Jill. Ha! Welcome Jill to #theAteam. Glad to have you aboard.
Earlier this morning, I had my first comment from someone in Germany. I would love to sponsor German recruits so if anyone is in Germany in search of a Younique sponsor, then let’s talk.
Younique launches in Mexico first then Germany later in the year. I’m on the lookout for wannabe Younique presenters in both countries now!
Last Sales for March!
Younique is a dangerous business. I suppose it’s the same for other cosmetics type companies. This is why I blogged “If you Love Makeup Don’t Become a Younique Presenter”. Frankly, the last thing I should have done today, was buy more makeup, but I couldn’t resist. I had to do it.
I was out walking with a friend at the weekend. We just kicked off the#5x50chal. She used to do Avon. I asked her why she stopped and she said because she was spending all her commissions on makeup. I nodded, silently, knowingly. It’s true. I’ve been a bit guilty of that too.
Party Confusion – Frustrating
In the spirit of honesty and transparency, I am going to share one of my biggest complains about Younique, personally…
It’s the confusion surrounding the virtual parties…I really do think that a lot of people I speak to still don’t understand the virtual party concept. I am not sure I can clear it up for them.
Twice now, it’s happened, where friends have bought through my own site (which is good of course) instead of using either my party link or the link I created for them.
Once it happens, they have a support document saying how to “attach it to a party” – but frankly, I don’t believe it works. Or it’s not idiot proof enough…
Think I need to have words with the co-founder Derek. I could probably teach him a thing or two (given I started building websites 20 years ago this summer…
So anyway, last night my lovely friend Han went and spent over £100 in products for herself and her daughter, and didn’t use the “party link” I’d created for her. (Oops).
I immediately tried to contact support.
They said she had to do it.
I wrote to them on her behalf (using her email address).
They sent the non-sense email with instructions (like the above document) – and 24 hours later – we’re no further forward.
At this point, I don’t think Han can be bothered to sort it….and I’m frustrated because it means we’ve both lost out on the “Party Perks”. (If she didn’t want them, I would have had them quite happily…)
Ok sure, I got the commission, of course. Thankfully. That was both great and needed today – as the new month begins tomorrow.
She managed to get her £8 Y-cash March Kudos (for spending over £60) which is something…But we both did lose out on half-priced and FREE items from that sale of over one hundred pounds. Boo!
Splurge for Dainty
Oh well I currently have almost £80 in y-cash so it’s not like I am desperate. Might have to Splurge for Dainty. It’s out tomorrow. I love Elegant which I have already. I already have one order for Dainty. Anyone else want it too?
Younique Simplified: 3 ways to buy Younique from me:
1) Shop through my Younique site. Always appreciated. Sure. It’s what most people do here. 2) Shop through my own party links (I always have one going. If you can be bothered, then simply ask for the link address – tweet me or scan my tweetsor email me: younique (at) theanewcomb.co.uk)
3) Shop through your unique party link and you get the perks! Half priced and maybe FREE makeup! (We do need to become Facebook friends for that to happen though). Let me know if you want some FREE Younique products!
Well what can I tell you for this week’s My Week In Younique? March is in full swing, and the first person to get an order in was the lovely Marie! Well, if you don’t count my Kid in a Candy Store (pictured here) purchase for myself!…Marie sold several Lip Stains which is fantastic. Have you used a Lip Stain? I hadn’t. They are – Smudge-proof. Smooch–proof. Worry- free. Sadly, I either left my lovely Lip Stain (from the Customer Kudos back in November) in California over the holidays, or I’ve lost it between there and here somewhere.
So frankly my new collection can’t come quick enough. Actually I was sorely tempted to buy the seven Stiff Upper Lip Lip Stains set! That’s the danger of being a Younique presenter, I tell ya…I blogged about it this weekend already in “If You Love Makeup Don’t Become a Younique Presenter”. As I often say here, I was never a big makeupy person, before and, even I, am totally obsessed with Younique products. It’s crazy-addictive. You’ve been warned!
Thea A-Team Challenges
Well I promised I would be as transparent as possible as I was documenting my first foray into Direct Sales (MLM) so here goes…I am delighted to have grown a pretty big company in a fairly short space of time. Though I hear other top level presenters talking about how many recruits they have made in just a few months, I do my best to not compare myself to anyone else. I have set my target to grow a big team and all my efforts almost are placed on that. I’m 100% committed to growing my team for a few reasons…
First reason, rather obviously, is that the only way to make any real money in this business is to grow a big team. When I first joined, I heard some stories about one Younique Sponsor having recruited 200 team mates, yet had 21,000 in her downline. When I heard that, I thought, “Ok, that’s my goal”.
Another reason to recruit is because it’s a numbers game in direct sales. Even in this short space of time, I’ve already had one person “drop off” my team because they didn’t qualify. There’s still time for them to re-qualify and they may do so, but what happens is, if you don’t qualify every three months, you’re considered inactive. You still have another 3 more months to get reinstated, so you never know, they may bounce back. In addiction to that one, I have a few more who will be struck off by the end of the month if they don’t miraculously sell their 125 PRS (personal retail sales – which is only around $125 – so 5 mascaras in any 90 day period is all you need to sell really).
I think I mentioned, in a previous blog, a stat that I heard in the early weeks of joining Younique, and that was “20% of your recruits will earn you 80% of your money”. I can see how that would be true or even is true in my case. Only about 20% of my team is doing anything at all. That tells me I need to grow a bigger team and ideally find more people like me (and my 20%) who want to build a proper business. Who want to put in the time to really make a living out of this. Hungry team mates.
Younique is NOT a ‘Get Rich Quick’ Biz
If you want to join Younique to make some fast cash, it’s probably going to disappoint you. It is work for most of us and frankly quite a lot of it! Thankfully I love it so much it doesn’t feel like work, but it’s been a lot of time invested into growing my business, learning as much as I can about the company and direct sales in general, making images to share on social media, blogging, etc. I see the past few months as sowing the seeds, and they’re starting to bloom. I’ve had my first enquiries through this very blog to join my younique team. One person private messaged me on Facebook asking to join! So all my work is starting to potentially pay off. I am happy to be a Younique sponsor to anyone anywhere in the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and Mexico too (Plus later this year Younique will launch in Germany too!) While I welcome absolutely anyone to #theAteam, as I say, I would specifically love to find dedicated and committed makeup lovers to join the team who want to make this a career!
To Cap Off My Week in Younique!
Well it’s about time to close for another week, but I will leave with one final, small promotional update…My two baseball hats and pink shirt arrived on Tuesday, I believe. They were made by a company down in England called the Cap Factory…
I acquired several quotes for branded baseball hats in Scotland, and they were all coming in pretty expensive for one-offs, but not the Cap Factory. I got them £14.95 (embroidered) each, so I was pretty impressed. The shirt’s so pink it could stop traffic!
One minor complaint was that the bills on the hats are a bit big and wide, but to be fair, I had opted for clearance hats! It meant the quality wasn’t 100% ideal, but as I say, I would definitely order from them again and choose better quality hates!
If you’re looking for branded one-off hats, I recommend you speak to Wendy at the Cap Factory and tell her Thea sent you!
