As if there were not enough on my plate, I’m now adding yet another “C” into the repertoire with coffee. Now I’m officially a purveyor of Cards, Cosmetics and Coffee. While the first two are direct sales companies I run as little sidelines – the real focus going forward for the foreseeable future will be the coffee…So how do all of my businesses tie in with each other? Is there a method to my madness? I believe there is, read on and I will explain.
That’s a good question. It’s understandable to ask why I’d launch my own brand of coffee when I really don’t know that much about it. One reason is that Coffee is the the number one most consumed drink globally. It has proven to be a mood lifter and people who drink it are often very passionate about it. When launching a business, they tend to say that you should be passionate about your product or service, and even though I don’t drink coffee, I am.
Truth be known, it’s not really about the coffee for me. Coffee is simply the vehicle with which to channel my mission or message through.
It has actually occurred to me that my interest may be due to the fact that for my entire life, my dad has drank coffee as if it were his lifeblood. He is heavily involved in helping me for this company and at the time of typing these words is the only person, apart from my logo designer, who even knows the name of the company. But I digress.
Back to being on a mission…
What is My Purpose?
I believe my role in life is to change the way people think. No more so than on soyouvebeendumped.com where around 50,000 lovelorn men and women would visit from all four corners of the world every single month.
In addition to simply giving people a space to read and share stories, it’s also my intention to show these people that an ending is just the beginning.
These heartbroken people often need to be reminded that they are enough, regardless of how it may feel at the time. Someone may have chosen to walk away or they’re facing some emotional challenges but there will be a way to turn pain into gain. (Check out the video below).
For positive healing, one must make it their mission to find their gift in their challenging situation – no matter how bad or dark it may seem at the time.
Strangely, or not as the case may be, Younique’s mission is to Uplift, Empower & Validate. That is one of the reasons that I actually joined Youniquein 2014.
Their mission aligned with my own personal ethos, as well as that of So You’ve Been Dumped.
It all ties into this concept of making people feel better about themselves, because, in my experience, we all have some sort of issues about ourselves.
Most of us can feel not pretty enough, smart enough, successful enough, or what have you. This goes for men and women alike. Many of these limiting beliefs will be operating on a deep subconscious level and need to be reprogrammed. Here is where the coffee comes in.
My Coffee Mission
My new brand of coffee will follow similar principles to SYBD…it’s designed specifically to empower its drinkers.
So instead of taking a time out, they will be encouraged to take a time in. What do I mean by that? They’ll be urged to make their coffee, pause while they drink it, in order to check in to see how they’re feeling, note their thoughts, their energy, and take steps to shift it accordingly.
It’s an exciting concept. I can’t say too much this week, but maybe next week. I may even do my first Facebook Live. We’ll see.

My Youniqueiversary – 2 Years On
So pleased to report that today is my two-year anniversary as a Younique presenter and sponsor. My Youniqueiversary, if you will. This post will pick up from last year’s My Year In Younique post. Over the last year, I have continued to detail the highs and lows of being a Younique Presenter*. It’s not easy to be Younique, but overall I still love presenting, as much as the day I joined, two years ago. And:
I’ve continued to recruit presenters – nearly 35 to date – which isn’t too bad (without trying).
I’ve reached another level.
The new products, ranges, kits, kudos, catalogues and so forth – help to keep things fresh and interesting for me.
Low Point of the Year
Arguably, the lowest point of my year, was having someone nark on me for my unsanctioned “dedicated Younique blog”. Whoops! My bad.
I was essentially busted for not having sought approval of the blog. Hands up, that was my own fault but I’d run it for a year and a half before ever being nailed, so I can only assume that someone complained.
Being shut down killed my Younique mojo for quite some time. Months, if I am being honest. Not only mine, but it also killed the morale of some of my team mates. It really wasn’t good. I believe that I lost presenters as a result.
So please make sure if you have a dedicated Younique blog that you seek approved by compliance. Read the Presenter guide carefully and do learn from my mistake! Please.
So after some soul searching, I took some time out, regrouped and set up the more general blog that you see here today. Now, instead of only dealing with makeup company, it features my greeting cards business and any anything noteworthy that I come across. Gifts, businesses or even people who deserve some coverage! Recently I featured the lovely Anna from My Cupcake Toppers.
High Point of the Year
At the end of November 2015, I finally climbed up another rung on the ladder to reach Blue status with Younique. To reach blue you need to sell $4000 with your team. That was one of the best moments of my entire business life. Seriously, it felt amazing to receive that order that pushed me to the next level – halfway up the ladder, or so.
When I joined Younique, I thought I’d be black status in a matter of months. That was my goal. Green by March and Black later in the year. To be honest, that was rather naive.
Sure, some Younique presenters have achieved the top ranks fast, but honestly, the vast majority haven’t and probably won’t. We currently have over half a million Younique presenters and just over 200 have reached Black Status levels 1, 2 ,3. Do the math.
The hardest part about sponsorship is seeing people join, often do excellent work for a while, and then they give up for whatever reason. Life gets in the way. They buckle to negative family and friend’s comments. They get frustrated that they’re not making any money it. I’ve always taken the “in it for the long haul” approach to Younique. Slow and steady. Some months I do really well and others not good at all. Generally I am pleased if it pays a bill or two. Plus I love getting discounted makeup.
Should You Join Younique?
Well you might be wondering “Should I join Younique?” and the answer is that it depends. It’s not for everyone. I love it still. I love the products. If you’re solely looking for a way to earn quick cash then it may not be for you…It could be, but probably not. I’d rather have you join with realistic expectations.
If you like the idea of something you can run alongside something else, enjoy discounted makeup, have a bit of fun, and want to make some new friends along the way – then it probably will suit you quite well.
In the worse case scenario – you get all the makeup in the picture above for an amazing rate. The Younique Presenters Kit changes regularly. It’s always a great mix of products, regardless. So even if you join for the kit (become a “kit snatcher”) it’s probably worth it just for that.

Younique Scammers – Sellers Beware
Normally it’s a case of “Buyer Beware”, but today my post is a cautionary tale for any online sellers. It’s about what I’ve learned to be a common phishing scam. This is a true story that happened to me as a Younique Presenter/Sponsor this week. What this is not is asking if Younique is a scam…If you’re searching for that sort of info, please read “Isn’t Younique Just a Horrible Pyramid Scheme” instead. (PS: It’s up to nearly 150,000 views to date, and spoiler alert: No, it’s not…a scam).
Selling Online Scams
As I mentioned, this is my story as a Younique presenter, but it should also be noted, that it will be a relevant read for anyone in Direct Sales – regardless of the company. You might even say it’s relevant to anyone who sells anything online, such as on Craigslist, Ebay, Gumtree or anywhere transactions may happen.
When one of my first Californian recruits, Teri joined the A-team nearly two years ago, she mentioned she had a similar story. In her story, it was a mother wanting to buy some makeup for her daughter who was getting married. These scammers always seem to have a story to tell.
I had not known that until Teri explained what happened. (It’s happened to her more than once). In Teri’s case, it was a woman who didn’t have a credit card and so wanted to pay by check. Wait, hold on, I am getting ahead of myself…
It Starts with An Email
Both Teri and myself had our first email through our respective company websites. My first message came in, and it simply said, “want to order”.
From the moment that I saw that brief, curt message, my spidey-senses were tingling. I immediately tried to test out the email a few places which showed nothing online.
Even though I was obviously dubious about it, you have to try to give people the benefit of the doubt. So I kindly wrote back to Mr Michael Cohen (email@example.com) with a very simple “How may I assist you?”
You’ll see from his reply a detailed order that “Michael” wants to place. It’s a big one! Who wouldn’t love that order…? If only…
A big detailed order also seems to be par for the course with the scammers!
So I reply saying that Younique is done 100% online and gave my direct shopping link to buy the makeup there.
Of course “Michael” says he is skeptical about using his “credit card online or any other online form of payments” and thus wants to pay by check or money order.
I feel like writing back saying I am skeptical about him, but I don’t…
The next red flag is when the person starts to use words effectively stating “I don’t want to pay online” (in some shape for form). That is where your suspicions, as an online seller, ought to be confirmed.
If you see that, run a mile, or at least be very, very careful going forward. OK?
Please note: Since joining Younique two years ago, I have met many people (strangers) in person who wanted to pay by cash. These were usually for the 3D lashes, which I always had in stock. More on that later…
So sometimes when a person doesn’t want to buy online it’s legit!
Back to Michael Cohen…
What’s also interesting, or even hilarious, is that not only can he not spell his last name right (OK, maybe that was just a typo?), but the mailing address he gives, is a fake one. (At least according to a map search pictured below).
But still, being a kind sort of person, or simply not gullible, I actually said that I have no way of taking checks or money orders. I gave him the link to find a local Younique presenter/sponsor.
So, if he is legit, and has real issues with shopping online, he can shop from someone local. Fair dues right?
Not surprisingly that was all I heard from Michael. Not even a “thank you” for my time!
My Advice for Selling Online
Proceed with caution always.
Don’t get excited when you see an order come in that way. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
Do your homework – e.g. try to find as much as you can about the person.
Don’t accept checks or money orders – unless you know the person or can verify they are legit. If you do take those forms of payment, wait until they clear before you buy any products!
In this day and age there are plenty of ways to pay online – even through a “pre-paid” credit card. So the whole “I don’t want to pay online” is generally bogus!
Be very careful if anyone suggests meeting up in person. As I said, I have met many strangers. I am happy to deliver Younique makeup locally in Glasgow, and to accept cash. I always meet in a very public place. Like with online dating, I’d recommend somewhere like a tube/train station or coffee shop. Everyone I’ve met (a dozen or so) has been fabulous. So don’t worry about that! Just be safe! OK?
If you find yourself in a situation whereby someone wants to transact with you, and making up excuses as to why they can’t pay online – proceed with caution. It won’t always be a scam but it very well could be. Do your due diligence. The same rules apply for any MLM company, on Craigslist, the trade websites, Gumtree or what have you. There are lots of scammers out there and I don’t want to see you caught out!
Update 1 Day Later:
After posting this post yesterday, I shared the link with my Secret Facebook Team group. I have now had another team mate, Charlotte, respond saying she’d just had one of these too. She has just messaged me the screenshot of hers.
I love how Flora puts her (alleged) USA phone number and says she wants to get products from Charlotte who is based in England. And the so-called Michael in Canada tries to order from a Scotland/Californian Younique presenter.
So firstname.lastname@example.org – 604-343-8019 – shame on you!
Name and Shame Online Scammers
Do we need to shame anyone else? By this I mean attempted scams taking place on any platform or with company. Let me know in the comments below. Let’s put an end to scammers. Naughty scamming people! Shame on the lot of them.
It’s been a fairly interesting year as a Phoenix Trader. Like any business at all, there have been things I’ve liked and things I’ve not liked so much.
Here on Glatitude, I try to blog transparently as possible (without dissing either of my parent companies – Phoenix and Younique, of course).
Some Areas for Improvement
Phoenix Trading is and English company that is over twenty years old. It was started by three women who shared a vision of starting a home-based business selling a product that they loved—greeting cards!
Starting in the more traditional off-line tradition has meant that there were some areas in the digital sense that I found lacking when I joined Phoenix a year ago today.
I have only placed a handful of orders in the past year, and managed to have difficulties in 50% of them. Not good!
Sometimes I thought the order had gone through only to wake up and learn it hadn’t. One time, at the end of the month, it even meant my missing out on a bonus I was entitled to! (My dear upline actually ended up paying to me herself because she felt bad!)
Another thing that irked me was that the website wasn’t mobile-friendly. It was just generally a bit clunky in my opinion. Let me also point out I began building websites the same year they launched this business! 1995….So I do know a thing or two about websites, design and user experience…
I am pleased to report though that the website is now better optimised after its recent re-launch. Hooray!
Autoships & Memberships
I guess I’ve been a bit spoiled by Younique and its one time only join fee (where you get a huge stash of makeup in a Presenter kit)…and its free website, for life! Love that.
With Phoenix you have to both pay for a website (once) and pay for membership (annually). That just seems to be a dated method in my opinion…
Well as I say it’s not my preference, but also not such an ordeal that I wouldn’t consider renewing and it’s that time today….
Time to Renew My Phoenix Business
This morning I woke up to read an email from Phoenix reminding me that it’s time to renew as a “Trader”. When I joined, I made a pretty big blunder of a mistake and I signed up for the £200 pound joining package.
It meant I got loads of extra cards just in time for Christmas, but it was way, way, way surplus to my requirements to be sure.
Now though you can join for £75 or £35 – which is miles better in my opinion. Looking back I’d have opted to join for the middle one I suspect and I’d not have “lost money” on joining at the two hundred pound price point! My aforementioned upline did try to warn me but I was having none of it.
Todays Renewal Email
So the email today read:
Now is the time for you to renew your commitment to operate as a Phoenix Trader.
It is a simple process which involves you paying your annual renewal fee of £12.00 (UK), €14.40 (FR), $15.00 (AU) or $18.00 (NZ).
That’s fair enough. Those rates aren’t cost prohibitive so of course I’ll be renewing.
Plus, I already have an order to put through for my friend Cathie, a few people have said they’d like a few things, so that’s no problem. It’s the start of the Christmas period and now somewhat exciting, it’s FREE shipping until the end of October so it’s a perfect time to shop!

This is a new feature I’ve been toying with for a while now where I get to sort of interview people that I think are doing something great. It could be handmade gifts, yummy foods, simply cool companies or anything I come across that merits some exposure really…Today I’m writing to spotlight Anna from My Cupcake Toppers…
1) What’s your background (in business)?
My background is quite mixed – starting as a post woman (ed note: a mail carrier) after university, then moving into Hotels for 4 years. And prior to having children I worked as a Business Improvement Manager for a large property company. This involved compliance and quality assurance, internal service auditing including ISO 9001, 12001 and 15001, and project management.
2) How would you describe your business in a one sentence elevator pitch?
We turn your images into edible toppers for all occasions.
3) When did you launch your business?
I started selling cupcakes almost six and a half years ago, which then diversified into printed cake toppers almost four and a half years ago.
4) Why this business, now?
I started the cake business as something to do to stimulate my brain a bit when I was a stay at home mum and the girls were only 1 and 2 years old. The topper business almost came about by chance, thinking I might just sell a few to keep the printer inks from drying up as I needed it for the cake business.
It has proved much more successful than I could have dreamed, and is now a fully functioning business accounting for around 95% of annual turnover, rather than just something to do for a little extra cash, and to give my brain a little work.
5) Where do you operate? (E.g. Do you trade internationally?)
We sell all over the world – basically to anyone that finds our website. The vast majority of our customers are in the UK. but we often ship to Australia, US, and all over Europe.
What advice do you have for someone starting up in business today?
Start small and don’t borrow money. Give Business Gateway a call as they have been an amazing support to us. And open yourself to ideas from other people – friends, families, social media – don’t take things personally.

Soon it will be my one year anniversary as a Phoenix Trader. I thought I’d review a little about my experience with them, why I joined and whether I’d recommend it to those of you who are searching for a flexible business or hobby.
If you’re considering something where you can work from home (or anywhere) and trying to decide if it’s right for you, read on. It’s my second attempt at direct sales but my reason for joining is slightly different to my first which is Younique. More on that later.
What is Phoenix Trading?
“Phoenix Trading is the world’s No.1 direct selling greeting cards, giftwrap, notecard, christmas card and stationery business.”
To be honest, even though the company had been going for over twenty years, I had never even heard of Phoenix. It wasn’t until this time last year when I was delivering a training course on the Isle of Lewis, in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. On the course, was a woman called Janet who was a trader herself. We discussed the cards briefly after the course, and some time later, when I got back to Glasgow, after another chat, I decided to join myself with her as my upline.
Why Did I Join Phoenix?
I joined Phoenix first and foremost because I love greeting cards. I’ve always liked having them around. I buy them for myself, to keep, to send and love receiving them too. Who doesn’t?
Secondly, and in some ways more importantly, as an “add on”. Because I already was running my Younique business, I thought cards would be a nice accompaniment.
I like to send personal “Thank You” cards to my customers, and sometimes even give them a free card in there too?
It’s something that doesn’t cost a lot to do, but the feedback I get, means that when they’re buying Younique again, they keep buying off me.
So maybe unlike you, I didn’t really join to run it as a business.
From day one I told Janet, my upline, that I’d not be “working it” – so no targets or pressure needed, thankyouverymuch.
There would be no real selling or recruiting here. as I really just wanted to buy for myself, and some family and friends.
For a year that’s worked out fine for me, but for the coming year that’s subject to change.

The Beauty of Network Marketing
If you find the right Direct Sales company for you, (and you may need to try on a few), it makes all the difference in the world.
Network marketing is not an easy business regardless of whichever one you choose. It can often feel more than full time work for less than part time pay.
Having been doing MLM for two years now, I’ve seen many-a-person join up all excited, get frustrated and then simply quit, often feeling frustrated and discouraged. Sometimes they end up blaming the company, sometimes blaming their sponsor, but seldom taking responsibility for it not working themselves.
Sometimes the company simply isn’t a good fit for them so they jump ship to another one – if they’re not totally turned off of direct sales!
The beauty though, to me, is that if you find the right one, you can work it or not work it as your life ebbs and flows.
I’ve done very little with my Phoenix business in year one, but now as we start nearing the holiday season, I will pick it up and market it a bit more.
I network in Scotland a lot, and do often have success by having products or catalogs with me when I do.
I post occasionally on social media and that is done to just raise awareness of what I do – rather than to sell.
Pros and Cons of Phoenix
Started too High When I joined, the pricing was a little different than it is today. There was a £75 starter pack and a big £200 pack. As it was in the run up to Christmas, I foolishly went for the £200 bumper pack. I lived to regret that.
If you do join, I recommend starting with a cheaper option (like now the £35 choice). Then you can work your way up if it seems to be working well for you! Because I started so high, I maybe lost money but to be fair, I haven’t needed to buy cards for a year, and have given some as gifts so it’s not an out-and-out loss in that respect!
Website: I’ve had quite a few issues with the website and ordering over the year. As someone who started building websites over twenty years ago, I can honestly say, in my expert opinion, that this website has not been a good user experience.
Shopping on the site has, at times, had me very frustrated with PT, but the good news is that there’s a new website on its way. One I am assured will be “mobile friendly”. I live in hope…
Geography of Phoenix Trading
Phoenix is a UK-based company – with 10,000 world wide independent sellers. You can join Phoenix if you’re in France or Australia or New Zealand.
The downer for me is that we are no longer in America, which is where I am from, and I bet I could recruit traders there if we were.
The good news is that there is a business option whereby I can recommend US people (lead generation as it were) and earn commission if they place orders (minimum of £200), but they can’t join my team.
The uplines are great for help. There is a lot of interaction and support – if you need it (Facebook groups). I very rarely did use the groups, because I wasn’t working the business much, but it was great to know there was a very helpful community just a click away.
On a handful of occasions I’ve had extensive Skype calls with Janet to get advice on what to do or any challenges I had.
The Products & Shipping
I love the products. The selection of Phoenix products is fantastic. Produced and printed in the UK, the cards are of high quality. These are not cheap and flimsy products at all. The giftwrap and stationery are fab too – it’s all lovely.
That’s the main thing. If you’re looking to join a direct sales company, so you can work from home or anywhere, you need to make sure you love the products (or at least a majority of them).
If you don’t, you won’t succeed. People will feel it. Authenticity is key.
Shipping is good, fast and a flat rate of £5.00 here – regardless of size.
Conclusion and Renewal Time
So would I recommend becoming a Phoenix Trader? Yes, for sure, I would. It’s time for me to renew my Phoenix Trader membership, and I will be doing that soon.
I will continue to buy for family and friends, and maybe even begin to recruit a team. Again that’s the beauty of network marketing – you can work it around your own set of circumstances. (Well if you find the right one where you’re not pressured to sell or recruit).
Will you make money at it? I think like all MLMs there are some who make a lot of money but most don’t and won’t. It will depend on you and your own circle or network and the effort you put in. I haven’t made any real money on either MLM but I have saved money by having both businesses (I’d be buying the cards and cosmetics anyway so this way I buy them at a discount).
But if you want to earn money – you need to work it as a real business, and put in those hours. You’ll need to be consistent. That means posting daily and giving it time and energy. You’ll need to preserver with it – especially on those days or weeks when you feel like giving up. (I guarantee you won’t be successful if you give up)!
Again I have no regrets in joining Phoenix Trading – apart from starting with that £200 Christmas Bumper pack. Janet did warn me and I didn’t listen, and I wished I had. Other than that…It’s been all good!
I’m also a Phoenix Trader in my first year of running my own greeting cards business. Unlike Younique though, I don’t actively promote the Phoenix business. I joined because I enjoy sending cards to clients/customers, family and friends and wanted to buy them at cost.
A keen networker, I do end up selling UK greeting cards to people I know – family, friends, colleagues.
On this blog, I can spend a little time talking a bit more about that too.
Finally, in the line of the work that I’m in, I meet wonderfully-talented business owners who are selling amazing products here in Scotland. This blog it’s a chance to talk a bit about the things I come across here too.
Direct Sales Businesses
Not all direct sales businesses are the same. The thing about running them is that you can feel pressured to buy/sell products or recruit people. I’ve chosen two that I am happy to be involved with – because I don’t actually have to sell or recruit in either. I chose to work Younique, but I haven’t been with Phoenix. The option to work more or less is down to me.

Younique Hits 500,000
It’s exciting to be Younique. We’ve now reached the half a million mark. What I don’t know though is if that’s active presenters or ones who have simply joined. I suspect it’s the latter. I personally have recruited thirty four Younique presenters but half of them or so are no longer active. So I’d be curious to know the actual active presenter numbers, personally. Facebook & Younique
Publicly and privately I’ve had a lot of questions from active and potential Younique presenters – all about Facebook and Younique. What follows will be my own personal thoughts and opinions on whether or not you need to do Facebook business pages or even host parties in order to be successful as a Younique presenter and sponsor.
Spoiler alert: No you don’t have to.
What The Hell Do I Know?
A bit of background, my main job is training (mostly Scottish) businesses how to market themselves on social media. I travel all over Scotland each week to do so, and so I feel I have good relevant experience and a differing point of view on this particular subject matter.
I know how challenging getting any real engagement on Facebook can be, hence my decision, from the moment I started with Younique, was not to use Facebook as one of my primary channels.
If it works for you to have a business page and host parties, then more power to you sister. It’s just not my way.
Don’t Just Follow Your Upline or Sponsor
I’ve been considering writing a post like this for a long time, but wasn’t sure how to do it best. As Younique and Facebook seem to be essentially married – for Presenters, Sponsors and Uplines – my challenge is to be both careful and respectful with how I choose to address this.
I often cite that what I love most about the company is the fact that we are all doing our own thing…but the trouble is when I see elites, e.g. from Green to Black Status presenters, constantly banging on about how essential Facebook parties are.
I have heard from many presenters (some on my team and many on other teams) asking if they “have to do Facebook”. This question often comes because they’re sponsor or upline is pressuring them to do them. Some of them have been on the verge of quitting as a result, (I know some who did!)
Since joining more than a year ago, I’ve watched countless Younique videos and read many blogs stating that you should always have to have 5, 10, 15 Facebook parties on the go every month to be successful in your business. I believe that that they truly believe that is to be the case, but I personally don’t believe it’s the only way.
So let me be crystal clear for you…
No, You Do Not Have to Host FB Parties to Succeed with Younique!
There. I said it and yes, I realise this may go 180-degrees against what the most common advice you’ve seen about Younique is, but it is my personal belief.
That may make some of you angry to hear but others will feel relieved.
I am currently a Blue status Younique, not an “elite”, but I have only ever had one Facebook party when I started, and honestly, I loathed it, so I swore I’d not do another one. So I haven’t.
I do suspect that some of the elites out there may be shaking the finger at me as if to say, “Well, you’d be higher up if you did them” (which admittedly may be true) – but the fact is I don’t want to do them, so I don’t.
It’s my business.
I don’t work for anyone else.
I joined Younique so I don’t have to answer to ANYONE else!
And you, my dear fellow presenters don’t either.
You are running your own business too, so you can run it any damn way you please.
Sure take on board what myself, or your sponsor or an upline says, but if it doesn’t resonate with you – then don’t do it!
Find your own path.
Before I even joined Younique, I saw countless Younique presenters cluttering up newsfeeds with spammy posts. This wasn’t their fault – many were simply following advice and scripts from elites. (I can spot a scripted post from a mile away, and they nauseate me and make me cringe every single time I see them.)
Some Youniques give the rest of us a really bad reputation, and make our jobs selling and promoting Younique that much harder…I’ve spoken to so many friends and associates, and met so many people since I joined, who complained about Younique (and other direct sales companies) for spamming their newsfeeds (with links, crap photos, too many selfies etc). Or worse yet the complained that they were private messaged to “share the opportunity” (again something I have NEVER done. I never had to, and recently I recruited my 32nd person!!)
Love Younique, Loathe Facebook
So you can probably tell that I, generally, love Younique, but have little more than a love/hate relationship with Facebook. The main reason I am even still on FB is to talk to my team – because that is where they all are. That’s also where there Younique groups are that I need to be on – like the Presenters Only group.
But I certainly don’t need to “party on Facebook”, or have a page or group, to have any Younique success.
So if you have heard that they are not “optional”, I am here to call “bullshit” on that theory, and tell you otherwise.
Younique Facebook Pages
As you know, you are not supposed to use your personal profile as a business. If you do, you are breaking Facebook’s terms and conditions, and you run the risk of Facebook closing down your profile.
I do occasionally post on my personal profile about the joys of running my business, my love of the products, or congratulating my team (who are doing awesome this month!) and, yes, once in a while I may share a link. I also will sometimes have a Younique cover photo on my profile. But I do not host parties, I do not have a Younique Facebook page or customer group. I don’t run my personal profile as a business.
Because Younique marketing on Facebook is almost cult-like advice, I do I a lot of research checking out what everyone else is doing…Yes, I snoop and I have seen dozens upon dozens of Younique Facebook pages that have been set up, and subsequently been abandoned.
Or the people are posting once a week, every few weeks or even once a month. They give up because either they’ve quit Younique (because it was not right for them or too much hard work), or maybe they gave up their page because it was too hard to get any engagement whatsoever.
Over the last few years, Facebook has made marketing to our “fans” (people who like our pages) more and more difficult. Well why not? After all, they’re a business and they need to make money. I don’t really blame them (as much as they frustrate me)…
They are always tweaking their algorithm in hopes of giving us a better user experience (showing us more relevant content). This means, in order to be successful with you FB business page, you need to really know what you’re doing, be consistent and be prepared to pay to be seen.
To have a successful Facebook business page you need to:
be consistent and post daily from 1-3 time a day (morning / night time and weekends too!)
make sure you’re posting when your fans are actually online (see insights)
mix up the type of content you’re sharing – videos, text only, pictures, links etc
have a CTA (call to action – link to a website, product page, newsletter
subscription page) but only every 4-5 posts (not every post!!!)
be helpful, informative, entertaining and not spammy! (80% helpful, entertaining & 20% promotional)
Younique Groups on Facebook
There are pros and cons as to whether or not you should have a Facebook Business Page or a FB Group (Groups can be public, private, hidden/secret).
ED NOTE: I do have a hidden group for my Younique team and it works very well as a vehicle to exchange information, questions, and discuss strategies or challenges. So yes, I do use FB for one aspect of my Younique business.
STATS: With the FB Business Page at least you get the stats about what’s working and what isn’t. You see demographics of who your fans are (where they are, how old they are, when they’re online etc). That’s invaluable.
NOTIFICATIONS: With a group, you don’t that valuable insight. On the other hand, group members at least get notified when there’s a new post, and also you can actually see who’s seen each post.
I can’t speak for anyone else, but I have been added to DOZENS of Facebook groups and events, and it drives me absolutely bonkers. I wish I could disallow being added to groups and tagged too!
Really the point of this, rather long, post is to tell you that it is OK if you don’t want to do any business marketing or promotion on Facebook. Yes Facebook does have the added advantage of user numbers, above all the others, but people are there to speak to family and friends and not necessarily to be sold to!
Plus it’s an over-saturated pond when it comes to any direct sales businesses – Younique or otherwise.
From the outset, I knew I wanted to market my business in other places, and so I do. And yes, maybe I’d be higher up the Younique ladder, if I was holding five to ten Facebook parties a month, but at what cost? What good would that be if I hated doing them all the time?
If you are not going to use Facebook as your main marketing channel, then you will definitely need to choose something else: Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Blogging, Google+, Events, In-home parties, “Coffee and Cosmetics” mornings, catalog drops or whatever…
The thing is you can do whatever way YOU want to. It’s YOUR business and no one else’s. You don’t need to answer to your sponsor or any uplines.
Sure, take on board all the advice, but then go and forge your own path the way that feels right to you.
You probably joined this business so you could be your own boss anyway, so why be accountable to anyone else?
Before I get all kinds of people coming on my blog saying I’m crazy or wrong, I will admit that I have seen some successful presenters, several on my team, who are doing great through hosting parties, playing games, and having their own private customer groups.
So I am not saying “DON’T DO THEM”, I am merely saying if you don’t want to use Facebook, then you don’t have to. Do what works for you!
Finally if you do decide to join the Ateam and want to use Facebook to host parties or have a group, then I have team members that will steer you in the right direction for scripts and inspiration. Some of them are doing awesome through FB and good on ’em!
There are no cookie-cuter solutions. What works for one presenter may not work for another. We are all doing it our own way – which is what makes this business so special.
Welcome back to ‘My Week in Younique’ where there is much to update you on. March has truly kicked off with a bang! It’s been a time of personal achievements, new products, deliveries, team mates, record breaks and territory too.
$XX,XOX PRS – YES!
This weekend, I managed to earn a very special PRS charm – EDITED: I am not allowed to say how much I sold.
It took me over one year and four months (and ten days, but who’s counting?) Sure there will be many who do that monthly, or who did it much faster, but there are also a lot who haven’t yet and even some who will never achieve it at all.
So this month, somewhat unusually, sales came from people I know. Often they come from strangers. This month the two big spenders who helped me reach my target were actually my big sister Wendy, and best bud Brian. Some of our products are suitable for men too.
I just want to say a heart felt “thank you” to all of you who purchased anything from me.
TWO NEW TEAMIES
This week I welcomed two new lovelies to my team. One from the isle of Islay and the other is from England. I often get asked for tips for recruiting but I honestly I can’t say I have ever really tried.
With Younique, as with most Direct Sales companies, there is this whole “Make a list of X amount of people you know…” To “share the opportunity” with…and I have no doubt that will work for some people. But honestly? It makes my skin crawl. It’s just now how I am wired.
Will blog more about that later, but my personal tips for getting recruits would simply be – be positive, consistent and share the love of the business, the products and the benefits. And not is some scripted sort of way. (Scripts also make my skin crawl). But that’s just my opinion. You can recruit whatever way you want. I prefer strangers coming to me rather than sharing the opportunity with anyone.
Friday I am pleased to say my new Younique collection – Trendsetter arrived. Like 80,00 other people in the first two days of March, I rather excitedly shopped for our new products that were launched. It was a hassle because the site was chewing up so much bandwidth with all of us clamouring to get our makeup, it kept falling over. Well eventually the order went in and just over a week later, my new products arrived.

We have a handful of products that immediately sold out (again). Yes, I know it’s frustrating that so many of our top product’s are not in stock. We are in fact victims of our own success. My Race to Green
So as you can probably tell, it’s been a great and exciting week…I’ve been keeping track of my “race to green” here on my blog, and I gotta be honest with you, it’s not looking hugely promising for this month.
Well, unless all of my team mates start to really kick some ass…(Some already are, thankfully). We’ll see.
I’ll keep trying until I reach Green status. I had felt like it would be this month – primarily as I’ve gotten quite a few recruits lately, and we were launching all these new products (which I assumed everyone would be buying like I did). Well, not so much…Oh well, I’ll keep praying for a miracle. I do love a good challenge anyway! See you next time lovely! x
